I closed the program by reading this passage from "An American Adventure," the closing poem from Robert Hunter's SENTINEL:

To hear is to forget, for a moment,
all but what is being said.
To forget precedents and
probable antecedents. To
forget who is saying and
who receiving. To listen
is to change places with
an idea, in idiocy, a saxophone,
a prophecy or a proposition.

Search for certainty destroys
any sense of proportion. Kid
starts out eating crayons and
ends up engineering a hostile
takeover of Gerber's.

And meanwhile, there is music . . .
Music is not a substitute for
meaning . . . _it is a replacement!_
Is this dangerous? It would be
if it were not, you know, _music_.

Sometimes it sounds like
bubbling syllables rising
from the scud and garnish
of the deep. A new thought to
be set beside a known one . . .
the unknown always adjacent
to something known.

When what is unknown is set
beside another unknown, any
sensible carnivore becomes wary.
Which is when, out of fear
or simple prudence, we tend
to freeze it, put it on a stick
and call it a popsicle.

It differs from a bicycle in that
it comes in flavors but, naturally,
makes poor transportation.
Really tragically poor.
Lick it if you like but don't
try to drive it to Los Angeles
in under six hours.

Also we got no slot machine space this year did we?

According to last night's (19may93) GDH - the local
version, not the syndicated one - those slot sound
effects last year came from Healy and the sound-booth
crew, not from the band themselves. First they sampled a
machine paying off a jackpot. Then for the show they had
a microphone inside an actual slot machine. They'd pull
the lever, broadcast the chunking and churning, and
"when Healy decided it was time to pay off" he would hit
the sampled sounds. Quoth Gans: I wonder if he paid
better odds than Vegas generally?"

All the above courtesy of Don Pierson (sp?) of the sound
crew, who was Gans' guest on the show last night.

Pretty good show last night, for those interested in the sound system
and the differences since they chucked the stage monitors.

The funny thing was, any time anyone (lots of calls taken) complimented
the sound, it was because the sound system was so great, and any time
anyone criticized it (different musicians disappearing in the mix, the
second set usually sounding better than the first, etc.), it was
because of what the Dead were doing on stage, or the 'subjective
differences' in the listeners' tastes. Pearson (sp?) is like Healy --
unable to admit that the technology he renders isn't perfect, or
perfectly employed (unlike my software :-) ). I particularly liked the
caller who said he went to the Floyd/Waters concert and had never heard
sound so good. The point is that the Dead's stuff is high tech, but
not always used properly (much like my software :-) :-) ).

Yeah, I was especially mystified by the claim that nothing is different
between first and second sets. Howcome at Oakland I can rarely hear
Phil for beans in the first set, but he is usually loud and clear (from
the same seat) in the second set? For an "illusion" this awfully consistent.

I know one time I saw somebody go out on stage and tweak something on
Phil's equipment, after which I could hear him just fine. (Does Phil
himself blow his equipment settings after all these years?)
